GHOSTBUSTERS

The Beginning

By Frederick Ortiz

“He’s gone to the underbrush,” whispered Roland Jackson. He looked over at a tall Hispanic. “Eduardo, call them over hear, we can corner him easily now.

Eduardo Rivera looked at the shrubbery, and then at Roland.

“You’re kidding, right chico?”

“No, Kylie has the trap, and…”

“I was talking about the bush…”

Roland didn’t reply. He took a step forward and a blue beam of light shot out at him from the bush. Eduardo saw it and pulled him out of the way at the last minute.

“Thanks, that was a close.”

Elsewhere Kylie Griffin and Kevin Shamrock were following an ecto trail that lead them to the other side of the bush Roland and Eduardo were at.

“It’s in there,” said Kylie as she holstered her PKE meter on her belt.

“Safari, so goody,” said Kevin, with a slight smile, just as his walkie-talkie gave a signal.

“Kylie, Kevin, this is Eduardo, over.”

Kevin grabbed his radio.

“We trailed Froggy to…”

“A very large bush, we know. We chased it there. Look it’s trapped but it can still fry ya with the aqua-beam of his.”

Kylie pulled out her radio.

“So what’s the plan?”

“We think it’s only worried about us,” replied Roland.

“And you want us to sneak up behind him? On of these days…” started Kevin.

“Look, let’s do this one and go home,” interrupted Kylie.

With that, Kylie & Kevin ran closer to the bush, while Eduardo & Roland started to fire randomly in an attempt to keep the ghost unaware of the others. Eventually Kev & Ky got behind it.

“That is a big frog,” said Kevin.

“Kermit’s going down.”

Kylie & Kevin opened fire on the frog, who never saw it coming was caught in the two proton streams. Kylie reached behind her with her left hand and grabbed the Ghost Trap. She threw it out under the frog and opened it. A multi-colored beam engulfed the frog-ghoul as it was sucked down. Once it was inside the trap closed with a snap.

“That was easy,” said Kevin.

“Too bad Eddie & Rolo took so long to get here,” said Kylie, as Eduardo & Roland came running.

“Damn man, we missed the fun,” said Eduardo.

“Hey, let’s collect the money and roll out,” said Roland as he picked up the trap.

A few hours later Kevin opened the door to his studio. It had pretty much the basic things for a guy to live. He took off his jacket and tossed it on the couch. He walks over to the fridge and grabs a Pepsi. He sits on the couch and turns on the TV, kicks off his shoes and starts to relax. On the TV, a news announcer was giving a recap of the day’s top stories.

“The Ghostbusters once again made their presence felt against the ‘ghosts’ of New York, as they captured an amphibian type creature causing havoc in Central Park… In other news, the NYPD has no leads in the disappearance of…”

Kevin turns off the TV.

“Too depressing… even for me…”

He gets up and walks to a small desk and picks up a small statue. He smiles as he remembers something. He puts it back on the desk and walks over to a window.

The Next Day…

“SLIMER!”

Eduardo chased the little green ghost up the stairs with a broom. Slimer turns around and gives him the raspberry.

“You little…”

Kylie comes out of a room and looks at the two troublemakers.

“Can’t you two get along, some us do need peace to work around here don’t you know.”

Eduardo & Slimer looked at her.

“Hey, he ate my lunch… again!” said Eduardo.

“Look, right now I’m busy studying for…”

“For your midterm, I’m sorry Ky…”

“Speaking of midterms, have you seen Kevin?”

“Yeah, he just showed up…”

Kylie looked at him.

“Just showed up, he’s never late.”

“I know, but I wished he showed up later, he and Garrett are about to rip each other’s heads off.”

That caught Kylie’s attention.

“Garrett’s HERE?”

“I thought you knew, he was here before Roland & me, and you normally show up around the same type as Kev…”

“Can’t believe it…” Kylie interrupted.

“Which one? Roller Boy’s here or Scam-rock is late?”

“Both.”

Meanwhile downstairs, Roland stood between Garrett & Kevin, who was eyeing each other. Garrett looked at Roland.

“This jobber took my spot,” he said, in mock shock. Kevin took offense to that.

“Hey, it was under EXTREME circumstances…”

“He’s right Gar, if Kevin didn’t show up when he did, Kylie wouldn’t be here…”

Garrett looked at him with a look that said ‘like I care’. Before things could get ugly, Eduardo & Kylie came downstairs.

“Garrett!”

“Hey Ky, looking good…”

“Yo Chicano, she’s my girl, remember,” said Eduardo.

“Whatever…”

“What’s your problem?” asked Eduardo.

“Hey, you gave my spot to Scam-pebble over there…”

“That’s SHAMROCK…” Kevin said, getting riled up.

“And since he’s here, I don’t need to be.”

Everyone was shocked that he said that, Slimer fell to the ground in shock.

“What’s gotten into you?” asked Kylie.

“Nothing… I’m outta here…”

Garrett turned and rolled out of the firehouse door, leaving the Ghostbusters angry & upset.

As soon as he was outside, Garrett went around the corner. He looked around, then smiled, than laughed. He suddenly transformed into another man. Wearing a neatly pressed suit, he stopped rolling in his wheel chair, got up and then blasted the chair.

“Phase I complete…”

Later that day, Kylie & Eduardo are walking to their apartment, discussing the day’s events.

“What got into him?” asked Kylie.

“You got me… I never thought he’d ever be like that.”

“There’s no way he should ever go off like that… few months off or not.”

They continued on until they reached their home.

A few hours later…

BEEP*BEEP* BEEP*

A hand slammed down on a buzzing alarm clock.

“Damn…”

Kevin opened his eyes to see what the time was. The clock read 7 PM in red digital numbers. He lies there for a few minutes, then gets up and stumbles to the wash-sink. He opens the water and splashes some on his face.

“I hate night shifts…”

Outside of Kevin’s window, a mysterious stranger is mysteriously watching him. Who or what ever ducks out of sight as he approaches the window. He opens it and grabs a shirt he had hanging there. He checks it out, then closes the window. The watcher smiles as he goes on with his business.

About an hour or so later at the firehouse Roland waited for Kevin to show up for his shift. The main door opened and Roland got up thinking it was Kevin.

“Bout time you got here…”

The stranger didn’t know what he was talking about.

“About time for what?”

Roland looked at the person and realized it was not Kevin, but rather an older looking man with grayish brown hair. Roland tried to play it off.

“Sorry… I’m…”

“Roland Jackson, I know… look I’m here to warn you…”

“Warn me?”

“Not just you but all the Ghostbusters… things are going to worse…”

Just then Kevin came running in.

“Sorry I’m…”

“Sssh!” Roland said. The man looked at Kevin.

“Who are you?”

“Kevin Shamrock.”

“Shouldn’t mean anything… anyhow the gates will be opened soon…”

“Gates? What Gates?” asked Roland.

“You’ll find out soon enough…”

The man then turned to leave. Kevin & Roland looked at each other, than Kevin grabbed the man’s arm.

“Hold up a sec… who are you?”

The man looked at him and smiled.

“Won’t matter in a few moments…”

The man removed Kevin’s hand from his arm, and reached inside his pocket. He pulled out a small device. He then pressed a button and a bluish hole opened up out of nowhere. Roland & Kevin watched as the man walked forward and disappeared, soon followed by the hole. They looked at each other again, than at the where the hole was.

“I’ll call Kylie,” said Roland as he picked up the phone.

At their home, Kylie & Eduardo were eating a quiet dinner. Their apartment was decent in terms of size. Pictures decorated the walls; there were two bookshelves in the living room, full with books on magic, mythology & the supernatural.

“I’d told you that you’ll like it,” said Kylie as Eduardo put a second helping of something on his plate.

“Yeah, but you never told be what it was,” retorted Eduardo.

“It’s…”

Just then the phone rang. Kylie got up to answer it.

“Hello… you’re kidding right… you called…. Okay we’ll be right there… bye.”

Eduardo looked at her.

“Roland or Kevin.”

“Both.”

“What’s wrong then?”

“They wouldn’t say… but they sounded serious.”

A short time later at the firehouse, Roland was adjusting one of the proton packs, while Kevin was checking the Occult Reference Net for anything on what was told to them.

“I can’t find a damn thing on the ORNet about these gates…”

“What about the guy?” Roland asked.

“You kidding? You saw that thing he had and what it did, he ain’t exactly a type of guy to live over in the Heights.”

Just then Kylie & Eduardo came in, both did not look thrilled.

“Okay, what’s the story?” asked Eduardo.

“Let’s see, strange guy comes too firehouse, warns us about some gates opening up, then pulls out a strange device, opens a hole, disappears into it, along with the whole, Roland did I miss anything?” answered Kevin.

Kylie looked at Roland.

“Anything else?”

“Yeah we got a call too.”

“Oh man… and I just ate too…” complained Eduardo.

“Eddie stop complaining,” said Kylie.

Kevin picked up a piece of paper, and looked at it.

“From the guy told me, we’re dealing with a creature with flight capability & pyrokinetic powers.”

Eduardo looked at him.

“In English por favor…”

“A big bird with strong fire powers,” translated Kylie.

“All right, let’s roll,” said Kevin as he headed to the Ecto-1.

Outside the firehouse on the fire escape, the same stranger that was outside Kevin’s window is watching the Ghostbusters. Again who or whatever it is smiles, and this time drops down to the street.

The Ghostbusters pulled up in front of a comedy club where people are running in all direction. A large, fat bird, with no feathers is flying above launching fireballs from it’s beak at the ground. It hits a pick-up and turns it into an actual ‘Hot’ rod. It dive bombs an unsuspecting man, knocking him out. The Ghostbusters pile out of the Ecto-1 and examine the situation, behind it. Kylie pulls out her PKE meter and starts to take readings.

“Tweety is having a bad day, hey essa,” said Eduardo to Roland.

“Whatever got all riled up is the least of our worries, Eduardo,” replied Roland.

“Defiantly a class 5,” said Kylie, while holstering the meter.

“And very ugly too,” added Kevin.

The bird turns it’s attention to the Ghostbusters, let’s out a screech and makes a bead for it.

“Here she comes!” yelled Kylie.

“On three!” yelled Roland.

“THREE!”

The Ghostbusters fire on the bird, but miss as it maneuvers to safety.

“You got to be kidding me… nothing can move that fast…” said Eduardo as tries to capture the bird in his proton stream.

“It can! So stop complaining!” yelled Kylie.

The bird opens its beak and fires a fireball at the Ghostbusters.

“INCOMING!” screamed Kevin. They all jump out of the way as the fireball hits the front of the comedy club.

“Well… nobody good ever performed there any how, said Eduardo.

The Ghostbusters recover to see that the bird was flying out of the area.

“Hey, the KFC is getting away!” yelled Kevin, and he started to run after it.

“Yo Kev! Wait up!” yelled Eduardo and he started after him.

Roland and Kylie ran to the Ecto-1.

“Maybe we can cut it off,” said Roland as he started the engine.

Eduardo & Kevin chased the oversized bird down the street until it vanished.

“Where’d it go?” asked Kevin, as he caught his breath.

“Don’t know, man… we were right behind it too,” replied Eduardo.

Kevin put on his Ecto-goggles and began to look around the area, hoping to find a trail.

“Hey, Eddie, take a reading will ya?”

Eduardo mumbled something and pulled out his PKE meter. As soon as he turned it on, it gave him a reading he had to double check.

“Kylie said that it was a class 5 right?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Cause…”

Suddenly something came up through the street. It was the bird, but different. It was bigger its eyes were blood red, and it…

“He doesn’t look happy,” said Kevin as he pulled off his Ecto-goggles.

“No shit…”

Meanwhile, Roland drove the Ecto-1 as Kylie gave him directions.

“That’s strange,” said Kylie.

“What?”

“The class five is gone.”

“How’s that possible?”

“Don’t know, but I’m picking up a class 7.”

The CB radio clicked on.

Kylie, Roland this is Eduardo, over.”

Kylie picked up the transmitter.

“Kylie here, what’s up?”

We got a big problem.”

Roland & Kylie looked at each other.

“What kind of problem?”

“Birdie grew up in a big way…”

“It changed?”

“ I’m picking it up as…”

“A class seven?” asked Roland.

“Yeah and it doesn’t look ha…”

Suddenly Kevin’s voice came over the radio.

DUCK!”

Kylie looked at Roland.

“Floor it!”

Eduardo & Kevin run behind a Ford Explorer as the bird fires another assault at them.

“Chico has a big problem,” said Eduardo as he tried to get a shot off.

“Since when did class 5 evolve to class 7’s?” asked Kevin. “Ghosts sure as hell at Poke’mon.”

Eduardo was about to say something, but another fireball interrupts him. The two Ghostbusters are now pinned down behind the Explorer until two proton streams come out of nowhere and engulf the bird.

“About time they showed up,” mumbled Eduardo. He & Kevin fired on the bird holding it still. Kylie then throws out the ghost trap to capture the bird.

“What took you guys?” asked Eduardo sarcastically.

“Hey, I had to do my nails,” replied Kylie.

Kevin shook his head.

“Anybody got a clue on how a simple class 5 changed into a class 7?” asked Kevin.

“Defensive reaction?” suggested Roland.

“We better examine these readings at the firehouse,” said Kylie.

At the firehouse, the Ghostbusters were looking over the readings from the night’s bust.

“Okay, here are the readings for a normal class 5, namely Slimer,” said Roland as he pointed to one computer monitor. “And here are the one’s from our new guest in the containment unit.”

Everyone took a look at both, examining them as best they could.

“They look the same to me,” said Eduardo.

“Same here,” added Kevin.

“Except for that,” said Kylie. “Roland what is that?” She pointed at a slightly elevated peak of the reading on the bird.

“That’s a bit high for a class 5,” said Roland. “I’d swear that was residual trace for a…”

“Class 7,” finished Kylie.

“How’s that possible?” asked Kevin. “I’ve checked out some of the cases of the Original Ghostbusters, and they never faced a creature that changed so suddenly.”

“Kev’s got a point,” said Eduardo. “Even we’ve never faced anything like that.”

“But don’t you find it strange, it was giving off class 7 readings when we trapped it, but we caught it as easily as we would a class five,” said Roland. Slimer floated down over him, a raised his arm. “No offence Slimer.”

“Now that is weird,” said Kylie.

“Think it has anything to do with that dude that was here earlier?” asked Kevin.

“Don’t know,” replied Roland.

Eduardo looked at his watch, then at the clock on the wall to make sure he was right.

“Hey, as much as I like to talk about all the possibilities of this, I’d like to get some sleep,” said Eduardo.

“Why?” Kylie asked.

“It’s almost six o’clock.”

Eduardo wakes up to a familiar feeling. He then rubs his hand over his face, he open’s his eyes…

“SLIMER!”

Inadvertently, Eduardo woke up the other Ghostbusters, who came running to see what was all the noise about.

“Damn it, Eddie,” said Kylie.

“He slimed me in my sleep.”

Slimer said something in defense.

“Doesn’t matter now, since we’re all up, let’s grab some breakfast,” said Roland. With that Slimer bolted out the room and to the kitchen.

About an hour or so later, the, Ghostbusters were in the kitchen eating. Kevin was working on some bacon & eggs, Kylie had some toast with jelly, Roland had a cup of coffee and was reading the newspaper, and Eduardo just sat down with a bowl of cereal.

“Unbelievable,” said Roland as he took a sip of his coffee.

“What?” Kevin asked.

“The police still have no clues to that disappearance to that…”

The phone suddenly rang and interrupted Roland. Kylie got up and answered it.

“Ghostbusters… okay… hold on.”

Kylie looked at the others.

“We got a call.”

“Tell them we’ll get to them later today,” said Eduardo.

“I don’t think they’re going to wait.”

“Who is it?” asked Kevin.

“The New York Police Department…”

The Ghostbusters pulled up to an apartment building, and exited the Ecto-1. The entire block was sealed off, with the police preventing anyone who didn’t live on the block from getting in. The Ghostbusters were then approached a plainclothes officer.

“I take it you’re the Ghostbusters.”

“Yeah, I’m Eduardo Rivera, that’s Dr. Jackson, Ms. Griffin and Mr. Shamrock.”

“I’m Detective Harding, follow me please.”  Harding leads the Ghostbusters to the house.

“So who’s missing?” asked Kevin.

“Young woman named Anya Owens,” replied Harding. “Don’t you watch the news?”

“Too depressing.”

Once the Ghostbusters inside the building, and up to the apartment; they all gasp at what they see once they get there. There was slime on the walls, the TV was smashed, and in general the place was a wreck. Kevin put on his ecto-goggles and began looking around.

“Whatcha see?” asked Roland.

“Massive traces of ectoplasm, a few trails of something off the scale.” Kevin took off the goggles. He picked up a fallen picture off the floor and looks at it. “Cute girl.”

Kylie pulled out her PKE meter, which short circuited after she turned it on.

“That’s strange,” said Kylie.

“What?” Harding asked.

Kylie just ignored him.

After a few hours of scanning, taking samples and questioning the neighbors, the Ghostbusters started to pack up their equipment.

“So what happened here?” asked Harding.

“We’ll get back to you on that,” replied Eduardo.

They got into the Ecto-1 and took off, leaving Harding standing on the sidewalk.

“We’ll get back to you,” he mumbled. “Some scientists.”

The Ghostbusters return to firehouse later that day. When they their however, they are all surprised to see someone waiting for them. Namely…

“Garrett! What the hell are you doing back here?” asked Eduardo angrily.

“What are you talking about, I’d just got back in town a few hours ago,” replied Garrett.

“What? You were here a few days ago, and you just flipped out on us, namely Kevin, over taking your spot,” said Roland.

“Who’s Kevin?”

“That’s me pal,” said Kevin, crossing his arms. Garrett turned his chair to get a good look at him.

“Hold on a sec, I’d never seen you before,” said Garrett. “And if I did, I’d wouldn’t snap about you taking my place.”

All of them looked at each other in confusion.

“Okay, what the hell is going on?” asked Eduardo.

A few hours later, everyone explained what happened in an effort to figure things out. Roland just got off the phone.

“It’s confirmed, Garrett was on flight 645 from Washington that arrived at JFK earlier today.”

“Told ya,” said Garrett.

“Since it wasn’t Garrett, what was that guy in the wheelchair a few days ago?” asked Eduardo.

“His evil twin?” suggested Kylie.

Kevin looked over at Slimer who was floating around aimlessly.

“Hey, anybody notice that when the guy showed up, we’ve had some strange things happening around here?”

“Like what?” Kylie asked.

“Take that bird, it was a class 5, that masked its readings as a class 7. That guy that showed up the same night, warning us about something big that’s going to happen. And that house we were at earlier today. Not to mention the twin.”

“What’s your point?” Eduardo asked.

“I’d don’t really know, but all this has happened in one weeks time.”

“We need a little help with this, don’t we?” asked Roland.

“Those readings at the house were like nothing I’ve seen,” said Kylie. “Before the meter blew up.”

“Okay, who do we call?” asked Garrett.

In a little suburban area, somewhere in Connecticut, Egon & Janine Spengler is sitting on the deck at the rear of their home. Egon was typing something on his laptop, while Janine is taking in the beautiful day. A cordless phone, that is sitting on the table rings. Janine picks it up and answers it.

“Hello… oh, hi Kylie… Egon? Hold on.”

She hands the phone to Egon.

“Yes… nice to hear from you Kylie… hmmm… fascinating… I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

Egon resets the phone and turned to Janine.

‘Trouble?” she asked.

“I have to call Ray, I’m going to need his help.”

“All right, but I’m coming along.”

Egon saw no point in arguing and headed inside.

A little while later at the firehouse, the phone rang. Garrett rolled over to answer it.

“Ghostbusters, if it goes bump in the night, we’ll give it a fright… okay, we’ll be right there.”

He punches down on the alarm.

“WE GOT ONE!”

The Ecto-1 pulls up to an office building in lower Manhattan. The final few people that were inside came running out the front door, screaming. Garrett rolled into a businessman’s path.

“What floor is it on?”

“All the way at the top!”

Kevin looked straight up, and almost fell backward trying to see the top.

“You have got to be kidding me…”

They walk inside, and ready their proton rifles. Eduardo looks around.

“Where’s the elevator?”

Roland looked at a detail layout of the building at the main security desk.

“Over there,” he said as he ran to a hallway. The others followed close behind. They all stopped when they saw…

“Oh man, that thing is,” started Eduardo.

“Completely filled with,” continued Kylie.

“SLIME!” finished Kevin.

“Okay plan B, where are the stairs,” said Garrett.

“Over there, and how to you suggest we get you up… the stairs?” asked Kevin. Then he thought about it. “I’m sorry I asked…”

A few hours later…

“I’m REALLY sorry I asked,” said Kevin as he and Eduardo lifted Garrett up the final flight of stairs, and as promised, Kevin drops Garrett and grabs his back. As Garrett settles back into his wheelchair, Kylie pulled out her PKE meter.

“Looks like a class 4.”

Roland looks over at her as Kevin starts to recover.

“You’re sure?”

“Yeah, I don’t want to over do it and fry most of the building because the readings are off,” said Eduardo.

The Ghostbusters ready their proton guns, as Kylie double-checks the meter. Before she can respond, the door leading to the top floor is knocked down from the other side.

“What the hell was that?” asked Garrett.

A skeleton type ghost lowers from above and in front of the Ghostbusters. It laughs and heads for the Ghostbusters at top speed. They jump out of the way, but the ghost runs into Eduardo knocking him down the stairs.

“EDUARDO!” yelled Kylie.

“Ky, check on Eddie, we’ll take care of the flying K9 treat!” yelled Roland.

Roland, Kevin & Garrett head after the ghost, as Kylie checked on Eduardo.

“Eduardo, are you are alright?”

“Yeah, only thing that hurts is my pride…”

Meanwhile, the other three Ghostbusters are chasing the skeleton-ghost down the hallway. Suddenly the ghost turned around to face them.

“Okay, pal, you can come quietly or,” started Garrett. The ghost picked up a large potted plant and threw it at them. They get out the way as the ghost heads towards them.

“On three!” yelled Kevin.

“THREE!”

They fire on the ghost and hit him dead on. After a few minutes, Kylie & Eduardo come running. Kylie opens the ghost trap, which sucks the ghost in with no problem.

“That was easy,” said Garrett, as Eduardo picked up the trap.

A little while later at the firehouse, Slimer was floating around aimlessly. He decided to go upstairs and raid the fridge before the Ghostbusters got back.

“YUMYUMYEAH!”

Slimer babbled happily as he picked out several items and placed them on the table. He then doubled checked them to make sure he had everything, than proceeded to make one of his free roaming sandwiches. Just as he finished making it, the door to the kitchen opened. Slimer turned to look and gasped…

In the Ecto-1, the Ghostbusters were discussing the latest bust on the way back to the firehouse. Roland was driving, Eduardo rode shotgun & Kevin, Kylie, & Garrett sat in the back.

“That was just nuts, man,” said Eduardo.

“What do ya mean?” asked Garrett. “That spook was as good as trapped when we got him in the streams.”

“No, man, that goober nearly took me out.”

“Eduardo’s right,” said Kylie. “We’ve dealt with some real bad ghouls before, but this was the first time a lower classed ghost close to knocking one of us off.”

“Yeah, think of all the entities that we’ve zapped & trapped,” said Garrett.

“Siren & Banshee,” said Roland.

“The Vampire Clowns,” said Eduardo.

“Tempus,” said Kylie.

“Ok, I get the point!” said Kevin.

A short while latter they arrived at the firehouse. They pulled into the firehouse, but all the lights were off.

“That’s strange,” said Roland. “I thought we left them on.”

“We normally do,” said Kevin, as he tried to find the light-switch.

“Where’s Slimer?” asked Garrett.

“Good question,” replied Kylie. “Slimer!”

“Ky-lie… Griff-en,” came a deep reply.

“What the hell,” said Eduardo. “A spook in the HQ?”

Kylie was about to grab her PKE meter, when the lights came on. In front of the Ghostbusters stood the Ghostbusters, or rather some older Ghostbusters.

“Egon, Dr. Stantz!” said Roland, in surprised.

“Hey, don’t forget about Winston,” said Garrett, as he rolled over to the tall African-American near the front desk.

“It’s good to see you, Dr. Spengler,” said Kylie.

“Yes, I know,” replied Egon.

“What’s this I hear about a re-call of Ghostbusters?” a voice came from above them.

Everyone looked up, and saw Peter Venkman. He slid down the fire-pole.

“Okay, the OLD Ghostbusters are here, but where’s…” started Eduardo.

“Right here Eduardo,” said Janine as she came down the stairs. Slimer floated down from the ceiling.

After a few minutes of reminiscing between the Original & Extreme Ghostbusters, Slimer noticed that Kevin was heading downstairs with the trap.

“And who is this?” asked Peter, noticing Kevin who was being pushed back to the little gathering by Slimer.

“Um, name’s Kevin Shamrock,” replied Kevin.

“He joined the team a while back,” said Roland. “When we were short handed.”

“He’s a receptionist?” asked Ray.

“No, man, he’s a full XGB,” said Eduardo.

Feeling a bit uncomfortable, Kevin started to back up.

“Guys, Mr. Bonehead here is due for a little trip to the grid,” he said. With that, he went down stairs. He looked at Slimer, and shook his head.

“Strange kid,” said Winston.

“At times,” said Roland. “But he hasn’t really back down from anything.”

Upstairs in the makeshift meeting room, Kylie gave a report of what’s been happening.

“From what I’m understanding, something big is about to happen,” said Ray.

“What do you mean ‘big’?” asked Roland.

Egon looked at a chart of the PKE readings from the past few months. He then picked up a Twinkie.

“Uh oh,” said Winston.

“What’s uh oh?” asked Eduardo.

“You’ll see.”

Egon stood up in front of everyone.

“Let’s say, this Twinkie represents the Psycho-kinetic energy in the area. If to scale, it’ll be about the size of the Antarctic.”

That got a response from everyone.

“You kidding!” said Kylie.

“With that much PKE, no wonder the meter picked up a class 7,” said Kevin.

Everyone looked at him.

“What do you mean kid?” asked Peter.

“Um, well, I’m willing to bet, we didn’t catch the class 5 from a few nights ago,” replied Kevin.

“You saying we caught a class 7?” asked Eduardo.

“Think about it. We were chasing a class 5, and the meters normally goes after the highest source of PKE they can find, right?”

“Oh my,” said Janine.

“This is fascinating,” said Egon. “What seems to be common ghosts are now becoming even more powerful.”

“That’s great!” said Garrett. “Bring ‘em on, I’ll nuke ‘em all!”

“But that’s secondary,” said Ray. “There’s got to be a reason why all this is happening.”

“Maybe they got new batteries,” suggested Eduardo.

“Okay, but let’s not forget about some of the other things,” said Roland.

“Like what?” Winston asked.

“First that guy that showed up a few nights ago and the missing girl from the Bronx.”

“The Bronx still standing, I thought Egon blew it up back in ’86,” said Peter.

They were about to continue we Slimer came flying in the room in hysteria.

“What is it Spud?” asked Winston.

Slimer pulled him out of the room. The others looked at each other, than followed. They went to the recreation room. On the TV, there was a special report being broadcast.

“Winston, turn it up,” said Ray.

“Right.”

Ladies & gentlemen, this is beyond anything this reporter has ever seen. There’s an actual hole in the middle of 32nd street. Now, we know that is not unusual, but this ‘hole’ has formed out of nowhere. We’ll keep you posted until we get further information.”

“We’ve got a problem,” said Egon.

“No kidding,” replied Roland.

The Ecto-1’s sirens screamed as the Ghostbusters headed towards 32nd street. Roland drove, Ray rode shotgun, and in the back were Kylie, Kevin, Peter, Egon, Winston, Eduardo, & Garrett.

“This is more cramp than the last time!” complained Peter.

“Well if excuse me for getting hired!” yelled Kevin.

Once the Ghostbusters arrive at the scene, they quickly pile out the car. Egon activates the PKE meter and begins taking readings, Peter, Ray & Winston went to talk with the witnesses and the younger Ghostbusters pulled on their proton packs.

“This is most unusual,” said Egon.

“Yeah, this hole is bigger than the one in Garrett’s stomach,” said Eduardo.

“HA! Very funny,” Garrett said in mock humor.

“So what is it?” asked Kylie.

“I don’t know,” replied Egon.

Meanwhile, Peter was talking with the Police Chief.

“So… what’s the story,” asked Peter.

“What’s the story? There’s a big hole in the ground, and why is it that you showed up so quickly. No one called you. Are you the cause for this?!”

“Now, now. This is not 5th avenue.”

Peter quickly went back to the Ecto-1, while Winston & Ray talked to a few civilians before they joined him.

“Get anything from the chief?” asked Ray.

“The usual “blame the Ghostbusters for everything” trip,” replied Peter.

“That’s strange, considering the police called the younger team in for the missing girl,” said Winston.

“Um… is that her?” asked Ray. He pointed up at the top of a nearby building. On top was a girl, about 19 to 20 years old. Her red hair was flowing wildly, but there was no wind.

“HEY ED! LOOK UP THERE!” yelled Peter. Eduardo looked at the top, and ran to the others.

“Hey guy, I think we found that missing chica,” he said.

“Where?” Kevin asked.

“Up there.”

The Ghostbusters looked up and saw her. Egon pointed the PKE meter at her and took some readings.

“She is giving off some high PKE levels, possibly a class 10.”

“Class 10? You’re kidding right?” asked Kevin.

“Egon never kids,” said Kylie.

“I guess we can tell Detective Harding that we found her,” said Roland.

The girl looked down at the ground.

“OH MY GOD! SHE’S A JUMPER!” yelled a cop who noticed what the Ghostbusters were looking at. The Girl jumped before anyone could make a move, and landed gracefully on the ground.

“Turn ‘em on!” ordered Garrett. The Ghostbusters readied their proton rifles.

“No, wait,” said Egon. “She’s possessed.”

“Meaning what?” asked Kevin.

“Meaning, if we bust the ghost, she’s toast,” replied Eduardo.

“Oh that’s just great,” said Garrett.

The girl smiled as she walked towards them.

“Ghost… Busters…”

Her eyes began to glow a bright blue as she raised her arms and sent out a blast of energy.

“Oh shit,” said Roland. The Ghostbusters jumped out the way and the energy blast hit a parked news van. Garrett looked over at what remained of it, then at Kevin.

“Never liked that station anyway.”

“Nether did she,” replied Kevin.

The girl turned in their direction and fired another ball of energy. Garrett rolled his wheelchair to the left and Kevin jumped to the right. The ball hit a local corner store, destroying the front of it instantly.

“Something’s wrong here,” said Ray. At this point Egon, Roland, Eduardo & Kylie made it back to the Ecto-1. Garrett got over there when the girl turned her back to him.

“Yeah, why isn’t she shooting at us?” said Eduardo.

“Jealous Eddie?” asked Peter.

“Eduardo’s right, she seems to be focusing her attacks on Kevin,” said Kylie. Kylie then looked for him. “Where is he?”

The girl was wondering the same thing. She looked around and then fired another ball of energy this time at a parked SUV. Kevin saw it coming and barely managed to run out from behind the SUV.

“THIS IS NOT FUN! I’VE HAD FUN! THIS ISN’T IT!”

Kylie looked at Eduardo.

“Any ideas?”

“I say we blast her,” replied Eduardo.

“But there’s no telling what will happen to her,” said Ray.

“It worked with Kylie back in the day,” said Garrett.

“Yeah, she…” Eduardo stopped when he saw the way Kylie looked at him. “Hey…”

“I know, I know. I was doing the Linda Blair bit.”

“All right, let’s blast her,” said Roland.

Meanwhile, Kevin was backing up against a wall. The possessed girl was slowly walking toward him.

“To Slimer, I leave all my enough cash for ten large bags of candy…”

The girl raised her arms, smiled and…

“THREE!”

Four proton streams slammed into the girls back sending her flying forward. Kevin jumped out of the way, and looked up into the sky.

“THANK YOU!”

“Hey, Kev, get off you butt and blast her!” yelled Garrett.

“Right.”

Kevin got up and fired at the girl, who began to change shape. She slowly began to turn and faced the Ghostbusters.

“What the hell is going on?” asked Peter. “Shouldn’t she be a microwaved fish stick by now.”

“She appears to be able to counteract the proton streams,” replied Egon.

“But that’s impossible,” said Ray. “Those packs are five times more powerful than the old ones.”

“Tell her that,” said Winston.

At this point the young redheaded girl has morphed into a large hideous monster.

“I think we made her mad,” said Roland.

“Gee you think?” said Eduardo.

The monster pointed its hand at the Ghostbusters, which began to glow a bright yellow.

“That can’t be a good thing,” said Kevin.

“Who are you? DDP?” asked Garrett. Kylie stopped firing.

“Let’s get out of here!”

The others stopped firing, and they ran to the Ecto-1.

“Start her up Ray!” said Winston. All the Ghostbusters packed into the car, and took off at top speed. Garrett looked out the back window.

“Hey, it’s gone!”

“WHAT!” replied the others as Ray slammed on the breaks; Egon got out of the car, and looked backed at where the monster was. Kylie handed him a PKE meter.

“That’s strange,” he said. “There’s no PKE being picked up.”

“You’re kidding,” said Ray. Egon gave him the PKE meter, and he looked at it.

“How’s that possible?” asked Winston. “There should be some residual traces.”

“I know… but the meter says that nothing was there,” replied Egon.

“I think we better get back to the firehouse,” suggested Peter.

On top of a nearby building, a strange man watches as the Ghostbusters drive away.

“Soon… soon things will change…”

Back at the firehouse, Janine and Slimer watch the television as the local news stations rip into the Ghostbusters.

“Well it seems the Ghostbusters failed again. Boy, I’m not surprised. Those menaces to society got what was coming to them…”

“Can you believe this guy, Slimer?” asked Janine. “The kids bust their butts out there, and look at the thanks they get.”

Slimer nodded in agreement. The Ecto-1 pulls into the firehouse, and the Ghostbusters exit the car.

“I’m going to analyze these readings,” said Egon as he headed upstairs.

“I’ll help,” said Roland as he quickly followed.

Eduardo, Garrett, Winston, Kylie & Ray all went upstairs, while Kevin went to the office that was once Peter Venkman’s. Peter sees this and followed him.

“Hey kid, whatcha doing in my office?” asked Peter, jokingly.

“Checking on something,” replied Kevin, as he sat down at the desk, turned on the computer and accessed the NY Occult Database.

“Checking on what?”

“That girl.”

“You mean Ms. Owens?”

Kevin looked at him. “How’d you guys know she was missing?”

“We all watch Channel 8.”

“Right.” Peter walked around the desk to see what came up on Kevin’s search.

“You’re looking at the history of a city block? I thought you were looking at what you could find on her.”

“I don’t think she’s what behind all this. I’m betting that there’s something we missed at her place.” Kevin read what came up. “It seems that the place she lived at had some prior supernatural activity.” Kevin printed what was on the screen.

“You found something?” asked Peter.

“Don’t know… yet.”

Upstairs, Egon & Ray were in the lab checking the readings that were recorded by the PKE meter.

“So Ray, how’s the used car dealership coming?” asked Egon as the computer analyzed the readings.

“Oh, I got hired by Sunder Technologies a few months after I started working there.”

“Sunder… aren’t they…”

“The Government’s source of high tech gadgets, yeah. I’ve come up with some new ideas for busting ghosts, just can’t get the permission to build them.”

The computer beeped as it stopped analyzing, and it printed out the results automatically. Egon looked over the print out, than handed it to Ray.

“This is bad…”

A little while later in the Conference Room, Egon presented the results from the analyses.

“All the ecto plasmic activity in the city disappeared,” said Egon bluntly.

“I know this is getting rather redundant, but how?” asked Winston.

“I don’t know,” replied Egon.

“If all the ghosts are gone, then what are we gonna do?” asked Kylie.

“Find out why,” replied Egon.

“Hey Spengs, the kid has got a clue or two,” said Peter.

“Whatcha got Kev?” asked Eduardo.

“Well… I did some checking at the house were Ms. Owens disappeared from. It seems the whole city block has had some sort of haunting or disturbance at some time or another.”

“Hold on a second, where is the place?” asked Eduardo.

“Manhattan.”

Everyone was silent.

“So what’s the plan?” asked Roland.

“I think we should check out the Owens’ place, see if there’s something we missed,” suggested Kylie.

“I agree,” said Egon. “If anything, she is the key to all this.”

“Whoa now,” said Peter. “Let’s not forget, that lady was after the Kevster here, and it wasn’t for a date.”

“Peter’s right,” said Ray. He turned to Kevin. “Kevin, you ever dealt with her before?”

“No, first time I saw her was in a picture at her place when we went to investigate.”

“Than why did she go after you?” asked Winston. “She did saw Ghostbusters, in a dark sort of way.”

“I think we better find that picture you picked up,” said Roland. “It might be a clue.”

“Jinkiees! You think so?” asked Eduardo sarcastically.

An hour or so later at Anya Owens’ apartment building, Kevin, Roland, Egon & Ray began to look through her apartment.

“How could on person have so much stuff?” asked Ray as he checked a small bookshelf.

“Have you ever seen Eduardo’s old apartment?” asked Egon in return. Ray nodded, as he remember the story about Eduardo’s nephew and the trolls. Meanwhile, Kevin & Roland looked over the pictures, to find the one Kevin touched.

“Why is it that all the bad things either happen to me or Kylie?” asked Kevin.

“Maybe it’s your personality?” replied Roland.

“Very funny, but seriously… what a second, Rol, remember that case with Rajos & the otherworld?” asked Kevin as he realized something.

“Yeah, that was nuts, dragons, knights, magic… why you ask?”

“It’s just that there were a bunch of portals to that world opened when she tried to conquer this one.”

“You don’t think she’s coming for revenge, do you?”

“Not sure… wait, here it is!”

Kevin picked up a picture, but frowned.

“Hey, Dr. Stantz, take a look at this.”

Ray & Egon came over to Kevin & Roland. Kevin showed them the picture.

“That’s you,” said a shocked Ray.

“No, really? The thing is that this picture was of her, not me, the last time we were here.”

“Egon, could this be someway of her picking a target?” asked Ray.

“It’s possible, but I’ll need to examine it back at the firehouse,” replied Egon.

Across town, the rest of Ghostbusters (Peter, Winston, Garrett, Eduardo & Kylie) were responding to a call.

“You sure you two up to this?” asked Kylie.

“Yeah, you’re not exactly young pups,” added Garrett.

“You calling us old?” asked Winston.

“No… but…” stammered Eduardo.

“Relax Zee, they’re right, we gotta be careful,” said Peter. “Besides, Roland & Kevin are checking out the girl’s place.”

The Ecto-1 came to a stop at a movie theater, were the manager was waiting for them.

“It’s unbelievable! That thing came right out of the screen!” she yelled.

“Just tell us were it is and take a huge step back,” said Eduardo.

“Theater 12!”

“Okay, let’s heat ‘em up,” said Winston.

The Ghostbusters entered the theater and headed towards the 12th theater. Kylie checked her PKE meter as the others charged up their proton guns.

“Class 4,” reported Kylie.

“I don’t get out of bed for anything less than a class 5,” said Garrett.

“Hey, you weren’t with us when we faced that last class 5,” said Eduardo.

“Let’s do this and go home,” said Winston.

The Ghostbusters entered the theater and slowly stepped forward. Up where the screen was, a small lizard looking ghost was floating around.

“Looks harmless enough,” said Eduardo.

“Yeah, I’d bet he’d slime me in a heart beat,” said Peter.

“So what’s the plan?” asked Kylie.

“How about Pete & I fire to left of it, causing in to cut to the right and right into your three streams,” suggested Winston.

“Good idea,” commented Garrett.

“All right kids, two on the left, three on the right,” said Peter. The Ghostbusters took their positions, and Kylie tossed the trap out ahead of time.

“Trap is ready,” said Kylie.

“Ok… NOW!”

Peter & Winston fired their proton guns directly to the left of the ghost, which as hoped turned around to the right and floated right into three awaiting proton streams. The three younger Ghostbusters lowered the ghost down towards the trap, until it was in range.

“Trap open!” yelled Kylie, as she opened the trap. All three cut off their streams and let the ghost trap suck down the ghost with no problem.

“Another ghost busted,” said Winston as he picked up the trap.

Meanwhile back at the firehouse, Egon & Ray were examining the picture found at Anya’s apartment, Kevin & Slimer were in the kitchen while Roland & Janine monitored the front desk area.

“So how’ve you been, Roland?” asked Janine.

“Fine, almost ready to graduate.”

“Top of your class I bet.”

“Yeah, surprisingly Eduardo almost cracked the top 10 percent,” said Roland.

“We’re talking about the same Eduardo who slept most of the time, who lost Kylie’s proton gun, who was turned into a clown? That Eduardo?”

“Yeah, he got his act together after that Cernunnos episode.”

“Why to impress that girl?” asked Janine.

“To tell the truth, I don’t know why,” replied Roland.

“So tell me, what’s the new kid like?” asked Janine.

“Kevin? He’s… a bit strange. Not as much as Kylie was when I first met her, but he has a few odd things about him.”

“Like when you told us about that guy who came here, told you two something, asked who he was and disappeared?”

“Yeah. The more I think about it, none of the rest of us would do something like that.”

“Ray would.”

Roland looked at her with a questioning look.

“Trust me, Raymond Stantz would do almost anything that a situation wouldn’t call for.”

“I thought that was Pe…”

“Peter Venkman would SAY anything, and so on.”

In the kitchen, Slimer & Kevin were preparing a meal for the others.

“Okay, spud, get 3 cups of flour,” said Kevin. “And make sure it ain’t SUGAR!”

Slimer gave him a salute and floated to over to where the flour was. He looked at the bag and made sure it wasn’t sugar. As soon as he brought it back to Kevin, Ray came into the kitchen.

“Kevin, get Roland and meet us in the lab.”

A few minutes later, Kevin Roland & Slimer entered the lab.

“Whatcha got?” asked Kevin.

Egon pointed to the photo-frame.

“The frame has a high source of Psychokinetic energy.”

“That we know,” said Roland.

“But… it also acts as a homing device,” said Ray.

“What do you mean, Dr. Stantz?” asked Kevin.

“Ms. Owens is possessed by whatever was in the frame… and she’s going after who was the next one to touch it.”

All eyes go to Kevin.

“You mean to tell me that because I picked up that frame this lady is trying to kill me?”

“Kevin if she was gonna kill you she would’ve done it when she had the chance,” said Roland.

“Thanks… I feel so much better.”

“The fact is that we gotta save her somehow,” said Egon.

“Well we got the bait,” muttered Kevin.

“What do you mean kid?” asked Ray.

“If she’s going after me, we could trap her…”

“Kevin, this girl is possessed,” reminded Roland.

“I know… but what if we modify a trap to…”

“To pull whatever is in her out,” finished Roland.

“Yeah… can it be done?”

Egon picked up a spare ghost-trap and looked it over. He handed it to Ray.

“It’s possible… but there’s a good chance that it won’t work.”

“We tried blasting her already,” said Ray as he placed the trap down on the table. “And that got us nowhere.”

Just then, the other Ghostbusters came into the lab.

“Hey guys, any luck on the girl?” asked Peter.

“We have an idea,” said Kevin.

A few days went by, and things were going smoothly for the Ghostbusters.

“WE GOT A CALL!” yelled Janine as she slammed her hand down on the fire alarm.

Kevin, Eduardo, Ray & Winston rushed to the Ecto-1, while Kylie grabbed a paper from Janine.

Winston started the engine and they tore out of the firehouse at top speed.

“It’s about time she made her move,” said Ray.

“Yeah,” said Kevin. “For someone that’s looking for me, she’s sure taking her sweet time.”

“You want her to find you?” asked Winston.

“Hell no,” said Kevin.

Winston drove as fast as he could, trying not to cause any accidents while they made the trip to the upper-west side. Kylie monitored the PKE meter as they got closer to their destination.

“We’re getting closer,” she said.

“Gee, you think?” asked Eduardo sarcastically. “What was your first clue? The screaming people?”

Kylie shot him a dirty look. It was true people were running in the opposite direction as the Ecto-1.

“Readings indicate a class 9,” reported Kylie.

“How’s that possible, she’s just possessed right?” asked Kevin.

“She’s growing more powerful by the second,” said Ray.

Winston stopped the Ecto-1 just outside of a police barricade, and the Ghostbusters rushed out of the vehicle. Kylie handed Kevin her proton pistol belt.

“Good luck Kev.”

“Thanks… I’m gonna need it…”

Eduardo & Ray went up to a few of New York City’s finest and caused a distraction while Kevin snuck by.

“I’ve got to be outta my mind…”

Back at the firehouse, Peter & Garrett prepared the Ecto-2 for flight.

“This thing actually works?” asked Garrett.

“It did back in the day,” answered Peter.

“That makes me feel so much better.”

Roland, Egon, Janine & Slimer came up to the roof.

“Are you sure you wanna do this Egon?” asked Janine. “You’re not as young as you used to be.”

“I know, Janine, but we’ve don’t have a choice.”

“If you’re right Egon, this situation could get a lot worse right?” asked Roland.

“Yes, I have a feeling that the young girl is just a diversion.”

“For what?” Garrett asked.

“I don’t know.”

Meanwhile, the other Ghostbusters made their way closer to where the disturbance was.

“Peter and Winston did a good job distracting them,” commented Kylie.

“Either that, or the cops don’t want to risk their necks,” added Eduardo.

Kevin didn’t say anything, he was too busy trying to stay calm.

“You ok, Kev? Kylie asked.

“Yeah… I’m fine…”

The Ghostbusters took a cautious approach. One would run ahead while the other two kept an eye out. Eventually they reached Anya.

“There she is,” whispered Eduardo.

“Right… Kevin you ready?” asked Kylie.

Kevin took a second to prepare himself. “Yeah…”

“Good luck chico.”

Kevin took off his proton pack as Kylie prepared to give him her proton belt and trap.

“This doesn’t work, we’ll buy you some time to get out of there,” said Eduardo.

Kevin walked forward slowly, keeping an eye out for who knows what.

“Get a grip, Kev…” he thought to himself. “What’s the worse that can happen?”

Just then Anya appeared in front of him, startling Kevin.

“Welcome… to the end…. “ she said. Kevin was about to say something smart but decided against it. He started to walk backwards… hoping she will follow.

“Um… right… “

Kevin turned around and started running. Anya followed close behind him. He ducked down a alley and hid behind a dumpster. Anya floated in mid-air and was looking for him.

“It’s no use… you know the end is near…”

Kevin switched on his proton gun.

“No I don’t!”

Kevin jumped out from behind the dumpster blasting Anya. Just then, the Ecto-1 came to a screeching stop out side of the alley. Kylie & Eduardo jumped out of the car and started to blast Anya with their proton guns. Anya turned to face them in annoyance.

“We got her attention!” said Kylie victoriously. Anya started to move towards them.

“Yeah… now what?” Eduardo asked.

Kevin knew what to do. He pressed a button on the side of the ghost trap and flung it out underneath Anya. She looked down, and looked back at Kevin furiously. Kevin waved.

“Bye, Bye.”

He opened the ghost trap and a vacuum of light engulfed Anya. The three Ghostbusters kept firing at Anya, and after a few moments, it would appear that whatever it was they had planned was working. A strange creature appeared to be separating from Anya and was being pulled down in the trap. Once it was completely separated, the Ghostbusters stopped firing and Anya fell to the concrete with a thud. The creature was screaming, clawing for anything it could hold on too. At last it was sucked into the trap, which closed with a metallic snap.

Kylie & Kevin ran to Anya, while Eduardo called for help. Kylie took out her PKE meter and started taking readings.

“Ms. Owens? Are you ok?” Kevin said, trying to get Anya to speak. She opened her eyes slowly. Kevin helped her sit up.

“Where… am I?”

“In an alley… do you remember anything from the past few days?” asked Kevin.

“No… what happened?”

Kylie turned off the PKE meter.

“She’ll be ok, there’s no traces of anything supernatural in her,” reported Kylie.

Just then an ambulance parked next to the Ecto-1. Eduardo led the EMTs to Anya. They helped her to the ambulance. Kevin picked up the trap, and looked at Eduardo & Kylie.

“Why do I have the feeling this is going to get worse?”

A few hours later at the firehouse, Roland, Egon & Ray were in the lab analyzing the readings from Kylie’s PKE meter.

“It appears to be just normal after effects for a possession,” said Ray.

“That’s what worries me,” replied Egon. “There should be something more here.”

“What do you mean Egon?” asked Roland.

“After we defeated Gozer in ’84, the two that were possessed were still giving readings of a ghost for several days.”

“That’s right… it had to do with how powerful the demon was,” said Ray, remembering the aftermath of the case.

“Whatever this was… it was only a pawn…”

“Eduardo said it was a bit to easy to trap it once it was separated from Ms. Owens,” said Roland.

“What does it mean then?” asked Ray.

“I don’t know.”

 RETURN TO THE OTHER SIDE
